Reverberation – in extreme cases becoming echo – is a common problem in many schools. Noise in schools is a familiar problem for which Sonata Acoustics can offer effective solutions.
Staff and pupils at Charlton school were severely affected by poor acoustics in their large multi-functional/sports hall. Sonata were contacted by Assistant Deputy Head and Head of Physical Education Deborah Reid, for consultation.
Colleagues at Sound Reduction Systems visited the site to carry out an acoustic survey. The room in question was a large multi-functional hall used for games lessons, sports teams, school assemblies and various other activities.
As is typical in spaces for multipurpose use, the hall contained hard, sound-reflective surfaces which caused unacceptable levels of noise reverberation. When staff or children entered the hall the noise echoed making it a difficult acoustic environment making speech communication difficult and uncomfortable.
To treat the hall, Sonata Acoustics provided Sonata Vario panels, often used for noisy classrooms and offices. The sound absorption panels were suspended across ceilings and fixed at high levels to ensure good, even sound absorption across all frequencies.
From Sonata’s extensive choice of colours, the school chose ‘Smoke’ to add colour contrast to the interior finish of the hall.
Feedback from the school has been very positive:
“We have recently held a whole school assembly with 250 people in the hall and the impact on the reduced noise delivery was noted by parents and governors. The Physical Education Department have noted the difference in student behaviours particularly with students who have Autism as the noise level has been greatly reduced and this allows the sessions to be calmer and with less background feed.”
Deborah Reid- Deputy Head of Charlton School.
Sonata offers an extensive range of solutions using sound absorption panels. Panels are available in a variety of designs and sizes. Panels can be bespoke and made to order and come in range of colours to suit any environment. Once installed they provide a beautiful solution to any absorption problem.
Sonata Acoustics use an innovative non-shedding acoustic foam, as opposed to the mineral fibre materials found in most other absorbent products. The use of non-shedding , non-itching materials in environments such as education or healthcare is much preferred by end user and installer alike.
